Our Charity Work

Social responsibility and support for local community

As a family and a business we believe strongly in fair trade and investing in people and communities.

We work in partnership with the charity "The Human Touch" which assists local communities in Kathmandu. Together with The Human Touch we have built two schools.

The charity also helps assist in funding operations such as cleft palate, club foot and other disfigurements. Sometimes the operations are of a more serious nature and in some cases necessary post operative counseling is provided.

Education at Peace Garden School

For the past three years we have been supplying the children of the Peace Garden School in the Kathmandu valley with vitamin A and worming tablets. Now 90% of the children are well within the UNICEF guidelines for height and weight. Not only is attendance higher the exam results are better.

We have also replaced the “hole in the ground” toilet with a new toilet block. We have provided a tube well with a motor which pumps non drinking water from the well to plastic storage tanks, similar to rain water tanks. These tanks have allowed us to introduce flushing toilets and sinks with running water. The pupils, most of whom come from the village pictured, have learnt the importance of hand washing. This message is being taken home and shared with families.

We have been helping the Peace Garden School for over ten years and are thrilled to see 3 students return as teachers.

Education at Nobel School

At the Nobel School we are fixing the old cesspit. We have managed to direct a water supply to the school and plan on building a new toilet block with running water similar to that of the Peace Garden School. We are also sending a teacher on a twelve month UNICEF course of best teaching practice at the end of which this teacher will have achieved a Masters Degree. The teacher will pass this new found knowledge to the other teachers who will use their new skills in their daily teaching at the school.

The Burns Unit

We continue to provide practical support to the Burns Unit at the ʻBir Hospitalʼ in Kathmandu. The Bir Hospital is the only place severe burns patients can receive treatment. The Burns Unit doesn't have an anesthetist. All operations or treatments are difficult and extremely painful. A couple of years ago we found they lacked the barrier cream that is applied to severe burns preventing bandages sticking to the wounds The Human Touch purchased 12 months supply of the necessary and essential cream. This is an on going donation.

Maya's Story

Maya is a young girl who was brought to The Human Touch by a friend. She had come from a mountain village where she had fallen into a fire. Maya was taken to a medical aid station but being so remote this took some time. Due to lack of medical attention and facilities as Maya's arm began to recover it welded itself against her body until she was unable to use her arm at all. Fortunately we were able to find a surgeon in Kathmandu who operated and helped Maya. The Human Touch assisted Maya with the operation and six months of physiotherapy. Once Maya had learnt how to use the upper muscles of her arm we were able to organise a prosthetic limb for her.

Maya is now a happy confident girl who has come to terms with her disability. She attends school and will be able to complete her education and have a chance in life.

Closer to home

Newang is the daughter of our ironer Jigme. Newang has cerebral palsy. We provide her with specialist care. This allows her mother to work and we pay for her daily trips to visit Newang.
